TEN WAYS TO GET ON TOP
-
This isn't necessarily the secrets revealed, more an understanding of search engines and a common sense approach to getting noticed on the web.
Search Engines, like Google, first need to know who you are, they need to see your home page, and more to the point, what's on it. If there's nothing on it, or there's a redirect, or maybe a static image or a flash animation, then to Google, you're not that visible.
OK, so your homepage is visible allowing Google to gather more information about your site. Google will initially rank you based on 'link earnings', bascially checking how many sites link back to your site or domain. More references to your site, then greater its integrity and therefore higher your ranking. Then, and only then, does Google set to work highlighting words from titles, descriptions and keywords from the pages themselves, matching your site content to someone's search criteria. Visible or optimised sites will always achieve higher rankings.
This is intended as a guide only and is based on today's search engines methods and processes.
-
01 Link Building
Search engines base their rankings on the number of links pointing to your site. More links in to your site, the better your ranking will be. Social Media has become one of the best ways to develop this. Also, avoid adding links back out from your homepage, search engine will follow these links back out.
-
02 Good Domain Name
It helps to have a relevant domain name, so if your company were to specialise in Digital Marketing, then digitalmarketing.com is going to rank very high.
-
03 Page Speed
The speed at which a search engine can read your page can influence your position or ranking. So ensure that your web pages and images are very well optimised.
-
04 Good HTML Markup
Ensure your site is extremely visible to search engines through good HTML markup. Compliant HTML markup makes it easy for search engines to crawl & highlight keywords.
-
05 Indexable Content
Any content that is not indexable or rather not in HTML is inherently invisible. If you do use Flash content, images and Video then at least support these with 'alt' text & transcripts.
-
06 Meta Data
Consistent and constant use of keywords across your web pages will ensure that search engines recognise your content as being relevant to a particular search query.
-
07 Good Site Structures
Design and develop crawlable site structures. Build your site so that search engines can reach all the content, nothing hidden and no dead ends.
-
08 Good copywriting
A well briefed copywriter with a basic guide to writing for SEO can ensure your content is written with both visitors and search engines in mind. Repeating the same words without sounding like you're repeating the same words, is best left to the experts.
-
09 Keyword density
Keywords and keyword phrases spread across a web page is known as keyword density. Keyword density is important but don't over do it, repeating these five or six times on a page should be enough.

10 Google Tools
Installing Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools will not only help promote your site but will provide useful data that can be used to further fine tune your SEO.
